₵50m bail for Wontumi is just a trap – Kodua slams at EOCO, NDC

New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart Kodua Frimpong has come out strongly against the ₵50 million bail imposed on Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, describing it as “absurd” and politically motivated.
Addressing a crowd of charged NPP supporters outside the EOCO headquarters, Frimpong didn’t hold back.
“This ₵50 million bail? It’s not justice—it’s a trap,” he declared in a video sighted by MyNewsGh. “They just want to keep Chairman Wontumi locked up. It’s abuse of power, plain and simple.”
Frimpong went on to accuse the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of using state institutions to target NPP leaders.
“Have you ever seen this happen before?” he asked the crowd, who responded with shouts of disapproval. “We all know what’s going on. The NDC is using EOCO and the police to intimidate us. But let me remind them—power is not permanent.”
He issued a sharp warning to the NDC, hinting that any future NPP administration would not forget how their members are being treated now.
“If you use power to torment your opponents today, don’t complain tomorrow when the tables turn,” Frimpong said. “Even if it takes us eight years to return, we’ll remember this. We’ll do to you what you’re doing to us now.”
The crowd of supporters, many of whom had gathered to demand Wontumi’s release, cheered in response.
Chairman Wontumi is currently under investigation for fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has also launched asset recovery actions as part of its probe. The case has stirred tensions between Ghana’s two major political parties, with the NPP accusing the NDC of witch-hunting.
