2026 budget reports approved amid Kpandai seat protests

The 2026 budget allocation reports have been approved by Parliament despite protests and chaotic scenes in the chamber over the Kpandai seat controversy.

The Majority pushed through the adoption of the report even as Minority MPs abandoned their seats and staged a chant-filled protest, briefly causing a scuffle that required intervention by parliamentary marshals.

The Minority maintained that the Speaker acted prematurely in notifying the Electoral Commission about the Kpandai seat while legal proceedings remain pending at the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court.

“The manner in which the reports were approved was shameful. There was no government business conducted as far as the Minority is concerned,” said First Deputy Minority Whip Habib Iddrisu, MP for Tolon.

Despite the disruption, the House completed the approval of the budget allocation report, a key step in the fiscal process, before adjourning.

The session ended amid strong exchanges and unresolved tension, leaving uncertainty about how Parliament will proceed with the next stages of budget approval if the standoff over Kpandai continues.

Iddrisu added that the Minority will advise themselves on strategy when the House resumes.
