Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has praised the 24-Hour Economy policy introduced by President John Dramani Mahama, describing it as a timely and strategic intervention to boost Ghana’s economy, especially in the area of renewable energy.
Speaking on TV3’s KeyPoints on Saturday, July 5, Kpebu singled out the ‘no import duty’ incentive on renewable energy supplies as a particularly commendable feature of the policy.
“It is a master stroke,” he said. “The incentives for the policy are classic.”
Kpebu argued that the country has little choice but to move away from its heavy dependence on fossil fuels and invest more significantly in renewable energy.
According to him, the policy’s direction is not only forward-looking but necessary for the country’s long-term energy security and environmental sustainability.
“We have no option but to reduce our consumption of oil and up consumption of renewable energy,” he added.
The 24-Hour Economy initiative, recently rolled out by the Mahama administration, is designed to stimulate productivity and job creation by extending working hours in key sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, transportation, and retail.
The policy aims to make better use of existing infrastructure, boost economic output, and reduce youth unemployment through targeted incentives and support systems for businesses willing to operate around the clock.
While praising the policy, Kpebu also emphasised the need for accountability and transparency.
He called on the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat to provide regular updates to Ghanaians on the policy’s progress.
“Maybe every six months, we should get an update from the 24-Hour Secretariat to see the progress of work and give feedback,” he proposed.
