$58m Cathedral rage and fuel price surge cost us the election — Bawumia Admits

Former Vice President and 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pointed to two key reasons behind the party’s loss in the 2024 general elections: the controversy surrounding the National Cathedral project and a significant fuel price hike shortly before election day.
Speaking in Takoradi at the start of his nationwide Thank You Tour, Dr. Bawumia candidly addressed party members and supporters, reflecting on the events that, in his view, swayed public sentiment against the NPP at the polls.
“The National Cathedral we were not able to complete after $58 million was sunk into it caused a lot of rage in the public.
“When I heard it, I thought it was a joke. The drivers were angry at us. So, people went to vote against us with anger,” Dr. Bawumia admitted.

Despite the loss, he expressed relief that the defeat was not influenced by religious or tribal divisions, stating, “I am happy that there is no religious factor and tribal factor that caused our defeat.”
Looking ahead, Dr. Bawumia assured the gathering that future NPP administrations would prioritize job opportunities for Ghanaians. “I assure you that in the next NPP administration, you will be prioritised for jobs,” he promised.
The Thank You Tour aims to reconnect with the party’s grassroots base, acknowledge their support, and chart a path forward as the NPP regroups for future political contests.
