Wa murder suspect confesses to killing 15 people

Residents of Wa can finally breathe a sigh of relief after a man believed to be behind a string of brutal killings confessed to murdering 15 people since 2021.

The suspect, 30-year-old Sherif Abdulai, was arrested at Adabiya, a suburb of Wa, following weeks of coordinated intelligence operations by the Upper West Regional Police Command.

His arrest came shortly after another suspect, 25-year-old Mahamuda Lamin, was picked up over the killing of night watchman Yahaya Issah at Dobile near the Wa New Market.

According to Regional Commander ACP Francis Yiribarie, Abdulai, an ex-convict, admitted during interrogation to targeting mostly night watchmen and mentally challenged individuals.

“The suspect confessed to killing 15 people in Wa Municipality since 2021,” the Commander said, adding that Abdulai also killed several people in Bole, Banda Nkwanta, and Bamboi, often burying the bodies in nearby bushes.

Police recovered a mobile phone, radio, a cutlass with customized edges, and other items believed to be linked to the murders. Forensic tests are underway as investigations continue to determine if he acted alone.

The breakthrough follows years of fear in Wa and surrounding areas after a wave of unsolved killings. The police praised the public for their support and assured residents of their continued commitment to bringing all perpetrators to justice.
