8 things you need to know about Kennedy Agyapong’s bid for NPP flagbearer position

Kennedy Agyapong, the former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, has officially declared his intent to contest for the flagbearer position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Here’s what led to his bold decision:

1. Withdrawal from “Thank You” Tour
Agyapong made the announcement shortly after pulling out of the NPP’s ongoing “Thank You” tour, citing safety concerns for his supporters.

2. Stabbing incident sparks concern
His decision follows a violent incident where a student was reportedly stabbed by a member of the security detail associated with Ali Suraj, a prominent figure within the party.

3. A call for Justice
“If they treat students like this, then what will happen to my boys?” Agyapong questioned, emphasizing the need for justice for the victim.

4. Decision to step back for Dr. Bawumia
Agyapong stated that he would step back to allow Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to continue the tour as the current NPP flagbearer. He explained this move was done out of respect for party unity.

5. A Promise of action
While withdrawing, Agyapong reassured his supporters, saying, “I am not leaving this here. I will ensure I deal with the one involved.” His words pointed to his determination to hold the responsible party accountable.

6. Announcing his 2028 ambition
Following the incident, Agyapong took the opportunity to announce his candidacy for the NPP flagbearer position, declaring, “I am using this opportunity to announce that I will be contesting because we have built the party for a very long time.”

7. A repeat of history
This marks Agyapong’s second attempt at vying for the NPP flagbearer position. In the 2024 primaries, he was a close contender to Dr. Bawumia, securing 37.41% of the vote against Bawumia’s 61.47%.

8. The stage is set for 2028
Agyapong’s renewed ambition signals another fierce competition ahead of the 2028 general elections, with his strong grassroots appeal setting the stage for a potentially intense leadership race within the NPP.
