998 prisoners granted amnesty by President Mahama

President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has granted amnesty to some prisoners numbering 998.

The President arrived at the 998 in consultation with the Council of State per Article 71(1) of the Constitution of Ghana.

This was announced in a statement issued on Monday, August 18, 2025, by government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu.

The 998 prisoners were chosen from 1,014 prisoners who were recommended for amnesty.

From the breakdown provided by the government, 787 of the people who have been granted amnesty are first-time offenders.

87 have their death sentences commuted to life imprisonment, while 51 prisoners on life imprisonment have their sentences commuted to a 20-year definite term.

33 of the inmates who have been granted amnesty are seriously ill, while 36 are over 70 years old.

2 mothers and 2 others have also been granted amnesty based on petitions presented to the president.
