Ghanaians can no longer be taken for granted

Former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya, Hanna Serwa Tetteh, has stated that Ghanaians will no longer tolerate being taken for granted by the political class.

According to her, the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections served as a crucial lesson for both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking in an interview on 3FM on Friday, February 7, 2025, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs highlighted growing public discontent with political actors and the need for accountability.

The public was becoming extremely disenchanted with political actors and wanted to make a change happen to demonstrate that they could not be taken for granted.”

A lesson for both NDC and NPP

Tetteh stressed that the election results sent a clear message to both major political parties:

  • To the NDC, which won with an overwhelming majority, she cautioned against complacency. Don’t take the Ghanaian people for granted, even though we’ve given you the space and power to make significant changes.”
  • To the NPP, she noted that their loss reflected the electorate’s frustration. You took us for granted. Don’t take us for granted anymore.”

She further urged political leaders to prioritize policies that positively impact the broader population, emphasizing that voters now have effective ways to hold leaders accountable.

Hanna Tetteh reiterated that governance is not just about gaining power but also about responsibility and accountability.

She advised political actors to understand the weight of leadership and be mindful of their commitments to the people.

Presidential Ambitions?

When asked if she had any aspirations to become President or Vice President, she shook her head, signaling a firm no to both positions.

Beyond Ghanaian politics, Hanna Tetteh’s influence extends to the international stage. On January 24, 2025, United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres appointed her as his Special Representative for Libya and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

This new role underscores her extensive experience in diplomacy and governance.
