Mahama will not remove EC Chair merely because of criticisms – Kwakye Ofosu
Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu has said Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa cannot be removed from office out of mere criticisms by NDC supporters.
The Minister explained that for any removal to take place, the EC Chair must have done something to merit her removal, noting that legal process must be duly followed.
“These things are decided by law. It is not whimsical. You cannot say you don’t like Jean Mensa so he should be removed. I will not endorse that.
“To be removed, you have to go through certain processes. You have to do something that merits removal. That must be proven through a fair and transparent process so if that threshold is met why not but I am not going to say that because Jean Mensa has been roundly criticised by the NDC, she should be removed. You cannot run a country that way,” he stated in an interview on TV3’s New Day, Tuesday, February 11, 2025.
He further stated that President Mahama who he said is measured in his conducts will only “go by the books” if any such thing is to occur.
“President Mahama is more measured in the way that he conducts himself. He goes strictly by the book and he’s therefore not going to say because in the past we had disagreement with Jean Mensa then she should be insoluble, no,” he added.
Meanwhile, a resident in the Volta Region is reported to have petitioned President Mahama to remove the EC Chair, Jean Mensa and her two deputies as well another assistant from office.
The petitioner cites incompetence and abuse of human rights of SALL residents as basis for his petition.
But Felix Kwakye Ofosu said he is yet to sight any petition calling for EC chair to be removed from office.
“I am yet to sight those petitions so I am not able to speak to it convincingly. The point must however be made that perceptions are not enough to remove anybody,” he said.
