32-year-old gold dealer wins Western Region Council of State election amid vote-buying allegations

A 32-year-old gold dealer Maxwell Boakye has emerged victorious in the Western Region Council of State elections, defeating eight other contestants in a competitive race.

The election, conducted at the Western Regional Coordinating Council, saw 28 delegates casting their votes. Boakye secured a decisive victory with 17 votes, while his closest competitor, Akwasi Awuah, polled 10 votes. The third contender, Adjei Clement, managed just one vote.

Maxwell Boakye’s victory came as a surprise to many major observers of the Council of State election in the region, as many predicted Akwasi Awuah, a well-known businessman to win the contest

Despite the peaceful nature of the election, allegations of vote-buying have cast a shadow over the process. Some aspirants expressed disappointment over what they described as a blatant display of financial influence.

Speaking to the press, candidate Nana Nkanomko lV claimed that delegates were allegedly offered GH₵50,000 each to sway their votes.

“I personally visited the voters, and they assured me of their support. However, when we arrived for the election, I was informed that each delegate had been given GH₵50,000. This election was bought, not won. If this continues, our country is heading in the wrong direction,” she lamented.

Meanwhile, Maxwell Boakye, a businessman and resident of Amenfi West, now makes history as the youngest-ever Council of State representative for the Western Region.
