GJA condemns assault on two journalists at Walewale

The Ghana Journalists Association-Northern Regional branch has condemned assault on two journalists allegedly by military personnel on Wednesday, February 12, 2025.
The incident is reported to have occurred at the Nalerigu junction at Walewale in North East Region.
The journalists are; Alhassan Dokurugu, a reporter of Asasse Radio and Tahiru Ibrahim of Zaa Multimedia at Walewale.
According to the GJA, the journalists were covering an incident involving the setting ablaze of a bus at Walewale when they were assaulted allegedly by the military personnel in the presence of police officers.
“We view this incident as a blatant attack on press freedom and a gross violation of the fundamental human rights of the journalists.
“We unequivocally denounce this act and demand that the military command identify and discipline the personnel, who carried out this act,” Chairman of GJA, Northern Region, Yakubu Abdul-Majeed said in a statement on February 13, 2025.
The Association called on the police to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to book.
“We wish to remind security agencies to recognize that we live in a civilized society where the rights of every citizen must be respected,” the statement added.
