Taxi driver arrested for allegedly knocking and killing 52-year-old man

A taxi driver has been arranged before the Dansoman Circuit Court for allegedly hitting and killing a 52-year-old man.
According to the report, the driver identified as Richard Essifie was driving a Daewoo Matiz Taxi, registered AS 890-19, when the incident occurred around 4:35 a.m. on February 15, 2025.
It indicated that the deceased Francis Yaw Osei was crossing the road near Biggies Pub on the General Acheampong High Street in Accra.
The 52-year-old Osei sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Ward. He later gave up his ghost while receiving treatment from the medical team.
Essifie entered a not-guilty plea to charges of negligently causing hurt and driving with carelessness and inconsideration.
Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit, the presiding judge, gave the accused GHC 30,000 bail with three sureties.
The court mandated that all sureties must be public employees making at least GHC2,000 per month and must live within its jurisdiction.
Essifie was also told to report to the police every two weeks and turn in his Ghana Card to the court registry. The matter has been postponed until April 30.
Essifie and two other passengers were travelling from Dansoman Last Stop towards Kwame Nkrumah Circle when the accident occurred, according to prosecuting officer Inspector Esther Mensah. She claimed that the fatal collision was caused by the driver’s disregard for traffic laws.
Osei’s body has now been taken to the Korle Bu morgue for preservation and autopsy after the cab was damaged in the collision.
