Nebuchadnezzar, Agorkoli and more – How police officers described Dampare’s era

Outgoing Inspector General of Police(IGP) Dr George Akuffo Dampare, though admired by some in the public, has a different story from within the Ghana Police Service, where he was the head.

Following his dismissal on Thursday, March 13, 2025, there was wild jubilation by both senior and junior ranks of the Ghana Police Service who were hitherto not enthused about his leadership style. Many described him as a dictator and draconian leader, likening him to Nebuchadnezzar, Herod and even Togbe Agorkoli, the ruler of Notsie.

According to a number of them who felt liberated over his exit and posted on various social media platforms, his administration was engaged in stunts aimed at winning public sympathy whereas the servicemen and women wallowed in suffering following some decisions.

It is public knowledge that the former Inspector General of Police(IGP)  was criticized by a section of the public for taking delight in centring attention to himself as though he was a politician neglecting his responsibilities. Current Minister of Communication, Samuel Nartey George is on record to have accused the police Chief of being more interested in social media fame than real police work.  He accused the former IGP IGP  of being only interested in things that make the police look beautiful on social media. “I am one person who is unconvinced about IGP Dampare and I’ve been very clear about it from the onset. I think that he is more about sensationalism and social media blitz than real policing. That’s my opinion and I may be wrong,” Sam George said.

President John Dramani Mahama in accordance with articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, appointed COP Tetteh Yohunu as the new Inspector General of Police.

In a press statement signed by Flexi Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister of Government Communications, it indicated that COP Yohuno replaces Dr George Akuffo Dampare appointed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
