GDP growth alone does not mean economic success

Ketu North MP Edem Agbana has raised concerns about the government’s emphasis on GDP growth as an indicator of economic success.
Speaking on Metro TV monitored by MyNewsGh, he acknowledged the country’s economic expansion but insisted that growth figures alone do not reflect the well-being of citizens.
“GDP growth is important, but it cannot be the only measure of a well-managed economy,” Agbana stated. He noted that while the country recorded significant growth in certain sectors like mining and oil, this expansion has not translated into improved livelihoods for ordinary Ghanaians.
He emphasized that despite these figures, unemployment rates remain high, and income inequality continues to widen.
“How can we celebrate economic growth when nearly two million Ghanaian youth are unemployed? Growth should mean more jobs and better living conditions, but that is not what we are seeing,” he added.
Agbana called for a more holistic approach to assessing economic performance, urging the government to focus on improving industries that create employment and enhance the quality of life.
