I did everything right, but it was clear that politics was at play

James Gyakye Quayson, Member of Parliament for Assin North, has described his recent acquittal as a form of vindication following a trial he believes was politically motivated.

His remarks came after the Accra High Court acquitted and discharged him on April 9, 2025, ending over three years of legal battles.

Quayson had been facing charges of forgery and perjury, stemming from allegations that he held Canadian citizenship when he filed to contest the 2020 parliamentary elections. Speaking to journalists after the ruling, Quayson expressed relief and confidence that justice had been served.

“When you know you are innocent, you have nothing to fear. No matter what they throw at you, you will bounce back. I knew I was innocent all along. I didn’t come to disturb anyone, but to serve my community and help my people,” Quayson remarked.

The Assin North legislator emphasized that he had followed all the necessary legal procedures in his election bid. However, he maintained that his trial was driven by political interests.

“I did everything right, but it was clear that politics was at play. We all knew it was politically motivated, and the judges confirmed that with their verdict,” he stated.

The case, which had drawn widespread attention, not only due to the legal questions surrounding citizenship but also its impact on parliamentary representation, now appears to be closed with Quayson’s acquittal. This marks a significant moment in his political career, allowing him to move forward with renewed focus.
