Court refuses bail to man accused of aiding Ahmed Suale’s murder

The High Court in Accra has again denied bail to Daniel Koranteng Owusu, the 35-year-old businessman accused of involvement in the 2019 murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Hussein Suale.
Koranteng, also known as Nana Amakye, is facing two provisional charges—abetment and murder—after allegedly selling photos of Suale to former MP Kennedy Agyapong, who later aired them on Net2 TV. Suale was later murdered.
This marks the third time his request for bail has been refused, following two earlier rejections by the District Court since his first appearance on March 19. On April 14, High Court judge Justice Kizita Naa Koowa Quarshie ruled that the accused remains in custody, though a future bail request could be reconsidered.
The defense, led by lawyer Nathaniel Egbor, argued that the charges lack merit, the accused won’t interfere with investigations, and his continued detention violates constitutional rights.
He also claimed Suale had already made his identity public via Facebook posts.
Egbor dismissed claims that his client fled after the murder, saying Koranteng only left Ghana in September 2019—months after the January killing—and has traveled in and out of the country since.
But the prosecution, led by Assistant State Attorney Maame Afua Osei Gyamerah, opposed bail, citing ongoing investigations and Koranteng’s phone records linking him to Suale’s neighborhood prior to the murder.
The court upheld the state’s request, remanding Koranteng into prison custody.
