The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, has issued a stern warning to victims of the recent fire outbreak at Adum who have begun renovating their damaged buildings with support from the New Patriotic Party.
Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM, the Mayor cautioned that any attempts to rebuild without proper structural assessment would be in vain, as such renovated buildings would be demolished by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly.
He explained that the move is to ensure public safety, citing concerns over the structural integrity of the affected buildings.
His remarks come at a time when he has become a subject of public discussion due to a series of controversial statements.
Earlier last week, Boadi announced that the KMA would begin a two-week decongestion exercise from Wednesday, April 16, 2024, aimed at clearing vendors from pavements and roadsides.
He warned that anyone found selling on the streets would face harsh consequences.
According to the Mayor, previous efforts, including arrests and confiscation of goods, had failed to discourage street trading.
He believes these acts of indiscipline worsen traffic congestion in the city and must be dealt with decisively.
At a news conference in Kumasi on Monday, April 14, Boadi outlined his approach, which he described as a combination of democratic principles and military-style enforcement.
He warned that his task force would not hesitate to use force against those who defy the directive to vacate the streets.
“I have my own military-democratic style, which I will be implementing. When we say leave the space, and you don’t leave the space, and I get there with my boys, we will beat you. If I’m alone, you will be lucky, but if I’m with my ten boys in their pick-up with their whips, trust me, we will beat you. If you don’t want to experience that kind of situation, do what is right and lawful,” he said.
