I’m not running in 2028—Napo shuts down flagbearer rumours

Minister of Energy and New Patriotic Party (NPP) heavyweight, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, has firmly dismissed claims that he is eyeing the party’s flagbearer slot for the 2028 general elections.

Speaking to the media, Napo made his current priorities clear: “My immediate interest now is to get a united party for a flagbearer to be eventually crowned. No, I’m not running in 2028.”

In the wake of post-election tensions within the party, Napo emphasized the importance of unity and respect for internal decisions, including reports produced to guide the party’s direction.

He issued a strong warning to dissenting voices within the NPP:
“If you don’t want to obey what the report says, you don’t want to be a member of the party. Because what is the single person’s mind or utterances? Nothing. Besides, for the party, it’s a good thing.”

He continued, “So, even though they are skeptics, they are cynics, they are doubters, all manner of people who say all manner of things… when majority decides we will stick to the report.”

Away from politics, the Energy Minister also had a witty response to comedian OB Amponsah, who recently made him the subject of jokes during a sold-out comedy show.

“Thanks for using my name to fill halls but bring my commission,” Napo joked.

“If somebody who is a comedian is using my name and he is filling halls, I am very happy. I thank him because he is putting my name out there for free,” he said.

“But I will let my lawyers write to him so that we share the proceeds, the revenue, because I am unemployed.”

Napo’s remarks not only clarify his stance on the 2028 elections but also reflect his humorous side, proving he knows how to take a joke — as long as the cheque follows.
