NPP moves to address structural weaknesses after 2024 defeat

After licking its wounds from the 2024 electoral defeat, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is switching gears from post-mortem to reconstruction.

On Wednesday, April 16, party bigwigs—including former President Nana Akufo-Addo and 2024 flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia—gathered at the Alisa Hotel in Accra for an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting. At the heart of the agenda? The way forward.

During the meeting, the 12-member committee led by Prof. Mike Oquaye officially handed in its post-election review report.

That committee had been tasked with dissecting why the NPP lost to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and how to avoid a repeat in future elections.

Now, the party isn’t wasting time. A new nine-member committee has been put together to review the party’s constitution based on insights from the Oquaye report.

According to General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, this move is part of a broader effort to reposition the party and plug the structural gaps that may have contributed to its defeat.

“The National Council has accepted the report, but there’s work to be done. A constitutional amendment is part of the process,” Kodua told journalists.

He added that while the report had just landed on their desks, full details would be shared with party grassroots and the general public in the coming days.

In the meantime, Kodua appealed to NPP faithful and the media to steer clear of speculation. “Let’s not jump the gun. Premature commentary could spark confusion,” he cautioned.
