We can’t endure this any longer – Weija-Gbawe MP slams ECG, GRIDCo over dumsor

The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Hon. Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has issued a passionate and urgent appeal to relevant authorities over the persistent and unannounced power outages (dumsor) that have plagued the constituency for months.
In a statement released on April 17, 2025, Hon. Shaib described the power cuts as disruptive, dangerously unplanned, and uncommunicated. Despite several engagements with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), he expressed frustration over the lack of action.
“I wish to bring to the urgent attention of relevant authorities the persistent and unannounced power outages (dumsor) that have plagued our constituency over the past few months,” he stated.
According to the MP, these power cuts have occurred without any prior notice from the ECG or the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), resulting in dire consequences for households, healthcare facilities, schools, and businesses.
He warned that the situation is increasingly compromising essential services and endangering lives.
“These unplanned outages occur without prior notice or communication from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) or the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), causing widespread disruption to households, healthcare facilities, educational institutions and businesses. The consequences are dire, hampering economic activity, endangering lives and compromising the delivery of essential services,” he said.
Although he acknowledged that the power crisis is a national issue, Hon. Shaib emphasised that Weija-Gbawe has been disproportionately affected.
“While it is clear that the current power crisis is a national issue, Weija-Gbawe appears to have been disproportionately affected, with some communities experiencing continuous outages for more than four days and in certain instances, even longer,” the MP noted.
The situation remains unchanged despite prior discussions with ECG officials to resolve the issue.
“Despite several engagements with ECG officials aimed at resolving this crisis, there has been no meaningful progress. While we have received assurances of GRIDCo’s intervention, residents of Weija-Gbawe continue to endure the burden of unreliable electricity supply,” he stated.
In closing, Hon. Shaib made a firm but respectful appeal to ECG, GRIDCo, and the Ministry of Energy to take decisive action.
“We therefore make a respectful but firm appeal to the ECG, GRIDCo, and the Ministry of Energy to take immediate and decisive action to permanently address this issue. The people of Weija-Gbawe deserve better,” he declared.
