11 dead in Amanase crash involving fuel tanker and sprinter bus

Eleven people have been confirmed dead in a fatal accident that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, April 22, at Amanase near Suhum, along the Accra-Kumasi Highway.

The crash, which happened around 5:00 a.m., involved a fuel tanker with registration number GR 1300-16 and a Benz Sprinter bus registered GW 6510-23.

Preliminary police investigations indicate that the tanker driver, believed to have been dozing off, veered off his lane into the path of the oncoming Sprinter, resulting in a devastating head-on collision.

Among the deceased are two females and nine male adults. Several others sustained critical injuries and were rushed to the Suhum Government Hospital for treatment.

Emergency responders from the Ghana National Fire Service and the Police were quickly deployed to the scene to assist with rescue operations and manage traffic along the busy route.

ADO1 Akonnor Opare Ohene Daniel, the Suhum Municipal Public Relations Officer of the Fire Service, confirmed the incident and noted that medical staff are working to stabilize the injured victims.

In response to the tragedy, Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Awatey expressed deep sorrow and is visiting the hospital to assess the condition of the victims. She is expected to coordinate further medical support, including the transfer of critically injured patients to advanced health facilities if required.

Authorities continue to investigate the exact cause of the accident.
