Mahama champions West African solidarity with new scholarship scheme

President John Dramani Mahama has announced a bold new initiative aimed at strengthening regional unity by offering 1,000 scholarships to tertiary students across the ECOWAS sub-region to study in Ghana.

The announcement was made during the official launch of the ECOWAS 50th Anniversary celebrations in Accra on Tuesday, April 4. Addressing dignitaries and stakeholders, President Mahama urged West African leaders to reimagine their collective future beyond political and economic ties.

“Let us position our sub-region not only as a political and economic block but as a diplomatic anchor for the continent, a model of integration, dialogue and peaceful co-existence,” he said.

The scholarship initiative, he noted, is more than a commemorative gesture. “This is not just a gesture, it is an act of solidarity.

It is a bridge to a future where our young people will grow up seeing each other not as foreigners but as partners.”

The president’s announcement was met with applause, as it reflected a growing sentiment that education and youth engagement are vital to the success of regional cooperation.
