Taxi driver jailed 25 years for defiling girlfriend’s 14-year-old sister

The Tarkwa Circuit Court has sentenced 22-year-old taxi driver Godgift Acquah, also known as Kwame Atta, to 25 years of hard labor for defiling his fiancée’s 14-year-old sister.

Acquah admitted guilt and pleaded for forgiveness during the trial.

Prosecutor Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Joyce Odame disclosed that the victim resided with her aunt, a farmer in Prestea, while Acquah lived with the victim’s elder sister in Himan, Western Region.

In November 2024, the victim’s sister attended a local event, leaving Acquah alone with the victim.

During this time, Acquah assaulted her, using a pillow to muffle her cries. The victim bled as a result, and Acquah coerced her into washing the blood-stained bedsheet to hide his crime.

Months later, on February 21, 2025, Acquah purchased an emergency contraceptive pill, Postinor 2, and persuaded the victim to take it to prevent pregnancy.

The victim eventually confided in her brother, who disposed of the pill and, with the help of neighbors, apprehended Acquah and handed him over to the Prestea police.

The victim’s brother and aunt reported the incident, leading to a medical examination that confirmed the defilement.

Investigations further revealed that Acquah was HIV-positive and regularly received treatment.

Circuit Court Judge Mrs. Manu condemned Acquah’s actions, stating, “You have sentenced the victim to a lifetime of misery. Your kind is not needed in the community, so you will be given a deterrent sentence to discourage others from committing similar offenses.”
