TTH doctors defend colleague, condemn public interrogation by health minister

The Doctors Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH) has issued a strong press statement defending one of its members who came under intense public scrutiny following a widely circulated video on social media.
The video, which captures a tense exchange between the Head of the Accident and Emergency Department and the newly appointed Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has sparked heated public debate.
The incident occurred during the minister’s visit to the hospital on April 22, 2025, amid concerns over the handling of a referred patient’s case that unfortunately ended in death.
According to DATTH, the social media narrative and subsequent media reports misrepresent what actually transpired.
They clarified that the exchange between their colleague and the minister began as a routine professional discussion about the condition of the referred patient and the difficulties encountered during his care.
However, the conversation reportedly “degenerated” into verbal exchanges.
In the statement released on April 23, DATTH expressed disappointment over what they described as “an unfair picture” painted of their colleague by the media, asserting that he has consistently demonstrated professionalism and dedication in his duties.
“Our colleague has worked tirelessly to support patient care at the Accident and Emergency and has always discharged his duties professionally and diligently,” the statement read.
The association condemned the public interrogation of their member and emphasized that sensitive issues concerning patient care and medical personnel deserve a more respectful and private forum.
“We believe the interrogation of our member in public was inappropriate,” the association stated, urging the public to refrain from spreading unverified content online and calling on media houses to exercise caution and integrity in their reporting.
The incident has sparked wider conversations about the relationship between political oversight and clinical independence, with many health professionals nationwide rallying in support of the medical staff at Tamale Teaching Hospital.
