We will monitor the suspension process closely

The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has called for the immediate revocation of the presidential suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, calling the move unfair and unjustified.
At its mid-year conference in Accra on April 26, 2025, 43 GBA members passed a resolution stating that the petitions against the Chief Justice did not present enough evidence to justify her suspension.
After reviewing the five petitions and her responses, the Bar expressed concern that the suspension undermines judicial independence.
On April 22, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama suspended Justice Sackey Torkornoo, citing a prima facie case and invoking Article 146(10) of the 1992 Constitution.
This decision followed consultations with the Council of State and the formation of a committee to investigate the allegations.
GBA President Efua Ghartey emphasised the importance of transparency in the process, noting that the Bar would actively monitor the situation to ensure justice is seen to be done.
She also highlighted the need for clearer guidelines on removing judges and other Article 71 office holders.
The petitions against the Chief Justice, which range from allegations of misconduct to administrative failures, have sparked widespread debate. The GBA remains committed to ensuring that the process is fair and just for all involved.
