Woman collapses after seeing her shop in flames during Lapaz Market fire

A devastating fire tore through a textile shop at Lapaz Market in Accra on Sunday, April 27, leaving the shop’s owner hospitalized after reportedly collapsing upon seeing her business in flames.

The fire, which started on the top floor of the building, consumed bedding materials and goods worth millions of cedis.

The owner, a woman, was immediately rushed to Lapaz Community Hospital after she fainted from the shock of witnessing her shop being destroyed.

Witnesses say she was deeply affected by the fire, which caused her to collapse.

Firefighters from the Abelenkpe branch of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded swiftly to the scene and managed to prevent the blaze from spreading to nearby shops.

However, the fire caused significant damage to the textile shop, leaving the owner’s livelihood in ruins.

The shop owner’s mother, who co-owns the business, was on the ground floor when the fire began. She recounted how her grandchild alerted them to the flames, allowing them to seek help from authorities in time.

ADO I Emmanuel Akwetey, Operations Officer at the Abelenkpe GNFS, confirmed that the cause of the fire remains unknown but assured that investigations are ongoing.

“We tried our best to ensure the fire doesn’t extend to adjoining shops. Our men are still in there conducting investigations, so at the appropriate time, the owner will be invited to our station for the report,” Akwetey stated.

The community is now rallying around the affected owner, hoping for a swift recovery as authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
