Convert abandoned cathedral site into apartments for workers — MP Fred Agbenyo proposes

The Member of Parliament for Guan, Fred Kwesi Agbenyo, has called on the government to repurpose the stalled National Cathedral project into affordable housing for public sector workers.

Speaking in an interview on Citi TV, Agbenyo described the multi-million-dollar cathedral initiative as a failed investment that should be redirected toward a more practical use.

His suggestion comes in the wake of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s admission that the project — despite costing taxpayers $58 million — contributed to public discontent and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the 2024 general election.

“The investment that they made in the so-called cathedral — $58 million has gone down the drain. I don’t know what we are going to do with that today. I don’t know how we are going to get that project completed,” Agbenyo said.

As a remedy, the MP urged President John Dramani Mahama to consider engaging private investors to convert the incomplete structure into residential apartments for essential workers.

“My advice on this show to President Mahama is that let us get some investors and let us convert that whole place into some beautiful apartment for workers. The Ridge Hospital staff can stay there, and people who work in the ministry can also stay there,” he proposed.

Agbenyo’s comments contribute to the growing national discourse over the future of the controversial project, which has been plagued by questions of cost, transparency, and national priorities since its launch. Calls for a complete audit or alternative use of the site have intensified as successive governments grapple with how to proceed with the partly constructed edifice.
