Heavy security at Manhyia Palace as Asantehene leads mediation on Bawku conflict

There is a strong police and military presence at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, as the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, commences a crucial mediation effort to help resolve the protracted conflict in Bawku.

The tight security arrangements have been implemented to safeguard the dignitaries, traditional leaders, and key stakeholders who have converged at the palace for the high-level peace talks.

The Asantehene’s initiative comes amid persistent tension in Bawku, where violent clashes and a decades-long chieftaincy dispute continue to destabilize the area. His intervention is widely regarded as a significant move toward fostering dialogue and lasting peace between the opposing sides.

A historian at the Manhyia Palace confirmed that comprehensive security measures have been put in place to ensure the peace process unfolds without disruption.

Otumfuo’s efforts are part of broader national calls for conflict resolution and stability in the Upper East Region, where the Bawku conflict has led to loss of life, displacement, and strained inter-community relations.
