NPP accuses Mahama of undermining judiciary, rallies support for May 5 protest

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is raising the alarm over President John Dramani Mahama’s calculated move to destabilise the country’s judicial system.

At a press briefing ahead of its planned “Save the Judiciary” protest, the party accused the President of acting outside the law and attempting to drag the courts into partisan politics.

Speaking at the event, NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye described Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo’s suspension as unconstitutional and deeply troubling.

He insisted the President’s action violates Article 146 of the Constitution and demanded a swift reversal of what he termed a “procedurally flawed” and “ultra vires” decision.

Boakye didn’t mince words, suggesting the country is witnessing a “diabolical agenda” to seize control of the judiciary, a move he said could endanger Ghana’s democratic foundations.

“This orchestrated assault on the judiciary threatens to dismantle the very institutional safeguards that preserve our democracy,” he stated.

He also raised concerns about Justice Gabriel Pwamang’s role as chair of the committee probing the Chief Justice’s conduct, pointing to potential bias due to his past rulings connected to the matter.
