NPP suspends “Thank You Tour” to participate in “Save the Judiciary” demo

The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced the suspension of its ongoing nationwide “Thank You Tour” to fully participate in the upcoming political demonstration, dubbed the “Save the Judiciary Demo,” scheduled for May 5, 2025.

This decision follows growing concerns about President John Dramani Mahama’s recent suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, a move that has sparked widespread criticism and accusations of undermining the independence of the judiciary.

The protest, a coordinated effort by five political parties, aims to challenge what they see as a direct assault on the judiciary’s autonomy, which is a crucial pillar of Ghana’s democratic system.

Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B), the National Organiser of the NPP, revealed the party’s shift in focus in an interview with Asaase News.

He underscored that the demonstration, a collective effort of five political parties, was now the party’s primary focus.

Nana Boakye emphasized that the event is not only significant for the NPP but for all Ghanaians who care about the future of the country’s democratic institutions.

“The party intends to suspend the tour so that all of us can be part of this important national exercise. This is bigger than party lines—we are fighting for Ghanaians and the future of our democratic institutions,” Nana Boakye said.

He also welcomed the support from the Minority in Parliament, with the Minority Leader strongly backing the demonstration.

According to Nana Boakye, this unified stand across party lines sends a clear message to the Mahama administration that any perceived interference with the judiciary will not be tolerated.

The “Save the Judiciary Demo” is set to be a critical moment in the political landscape, with five political parties banding together to demand the restoration of judicial independence and defend the integrity of Ghana’s democratic processes.

The NPP’s commitment to participating highlights the party’s determination to take a stand on behalf of the nation’s democratic values.
