Sam George called out over the rising cost of data in Ghana

There are growing concerns among heavy internet users over the rising cost of data over 100 days since the President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, took office.

Communications Minister Sam Nartey George, during his vetting in Parliament, assured the people of Ghana of ensuring that data becomes cheaper for the people of Ghana.

Subsequently, he inaugurated an interministerial committee in his early days in office to provide a blueprint on how to get cheap data for the people of Ghana.

During the inauguration, the Communications Ministry in a post shared via social media said, “The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP) chairs Inter-Agency Data Pricing Committee, inaugurated today with the task to assess prevailing pricing models and make recommendations.

The Committee has 14 working days to produce a road map that will lead to the reduction in the cost of data and make it accessible for all citizens.

The committee is made up of representatives of the Ministry of Finance; Energy; NCA; PURC; Chamber of Telecommunications; National Union of Ghana Students; Ghana Bloggers Association; Ghana Payment & Fintech Association and Association of Content Creators”.

The Committee inaugurated on February 14 was expected to provide their report after 14 days for action to take place to ensure that the people of Ghana are provided with cheaper data rates to aid their work.

However, nothing seems to be done about the cost of data as Ghanaian internet users continue to battle with exorbitant data prices.
