Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo appointed as new CEO of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital

President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, an experienced orthopaedic surgeon and respected leader in the medical field, for appointment as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.

Dr. Baidoo, who currently serves as the Ashanti Regional President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), works at KATH where he handles both orthopaedic and trauma cases at the Department of Surgery.

In addition to his clinical duties, he also teaches medical students and residents, contributing significantly to training and mentorship in the hospital’s academic environment.

The nomination was communicated in a letter dated April 30, 2025, signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, and addressed to the Minister of Health.

The letter directed the minister to take the necessary steps to regularise Dr. Baidoo’s appointment in accordance with the Ghana Health Service and Teaching Hospitals Act, 1996 (Act 525), as amended.

Dr. Baidoo’s nomination comes at a time when KATH, the second-largest teaching hospital in Ghana, is under increasing pressure to meet rising healthcare demands.

His blend of clinical experience, leadership in organized medicine, and involvement in medical education positions him as a strong candidate to lead the hospital through its next phase of growth and transformation.

Stakeholders in the health sector have welcomed the nomination, expressing optimism that his appointment will bring renewed focus to patient care, staff welfare, and strategic reforms within the hospital.

Once the appointment is regularised, Dr. Baidoo will officially take over the helm of affairs at KATH, overseeing the hospital’s operations, academic mission, and policy direction.
