No patient should be denied dialysis care – Dr. Bampoe

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Victor Bampoe, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing free dialysis treatment for patients with end-stage renal failure, amid growing public concerns over the program’s sustainability.

Speaking to the media during his working visit to the Ashanti Region, Dr. Bampoe acknowledged the technical and operational challenges facing the initiative but stressed that these should not prevent patients from receiving the care they need.

“There may be challenges, but if a patient requires dialysis and visits a facility, they must receive the care they need. If there are gaps, we must be informed so we can address them,” he stated.

Dr. Bampoe highlighted the NHIA’s ongoing efforts to strengthen health infrastructure across the country, including plans to increase access to dialysis services nationwide.

He also noted that while the NHIA currently covers about 95 percent of disease conditions in Ghana, there are still gaps, particularly in covering high-cost treatments like childhood cancers.

“We are working to ensure that dialysis centers are available throughout the country, alongside broader efforts to manage other prevalent diseases,” he added.

The free dialysis support initiative, introduced by the previous administration, provides life-saving dialysis sessions to eligible patients at no cost, significantly reducing the financial strain on families managing chronic kidney disease.
