Amidu clinging to relevance by distorting constitutional review roles

Renowned law professor, Kwaku Azar, has sharply criticized former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu for his recent attack on Professor H. Kwasi Prempeh, who is currently leading the Constitutional Review Committee.

Azar, in a Facebook post on May 7, 2025, described Amidu’s remarks as a sign of his “clinging to relevance” and his fundamental misunderstanding of the role of the Constitutional Review Committee.

Azar’s reaction came after Amidu lambasted Professor Prempeh in a public statement, questioning his involvement in the constitutional reform process. Amidu, who has been vocal in his political commentary, suggested that Prempeh’s leadership of the committee was out of sync with the intended scope of the constitutional review.

However, Azar, who has been a staunch advocate for constitutional reforms, dismissed Amidu’s criticisms as misplaced.

He argued that Amidu’s attack revealed a lack of understanding of the process by which constitutional reforms are carried out, particularly the role of the Constitutional Review Committee.

According to Azar, Amidu’s comments were symptomatic of his broader struggle for relevance and an attempt to distort the roles of those working within the constitutional framework.

“Amidu is increasingly sounding like yesterday’s man, clinging to relevance by distorting the roles of others who are working within the proper constitutional framework,” Azar wrote.

He further explained that the Constitutional Review Committee operates within a defined mandate and that Prempeh, as the chair, was simply fulfilling his responsibility as outlined in the Constitution.

Azar’s post also highlighted that Amidu, during his tenure as Special Prosecutor, demonstrated similar confusion about his own mandate, which he believes has now been carried over into his views on the constitutional review process.

“His tenure as Special Prosecutor revealed confusion about his own mandate,” Azar remarked, calling for a more measured and informed approach to discussing constitutional matters.
