That is pure hypocrisy – Justice Atuguba slams NPP over stance on CJ suspension

Retired Supreme Court Judge, Justice William Atuguba, has launched a blistering critique of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing it of blatant hypocrisy in its opposition to the recent suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Speaking in an interview on Joy News, Justice Atuguba questioned the party’s moral authority, pointing to its own record while in power as inconsistent with the values it now claims to uphold.
“How were they when they were in office? How did they perform? Acting transparently in the interest of the people, did they do that? What!” he said.
Justice Atuguba, clearly exasperated, condemned what he described as the sidelining of the public interest in Ghana’s political culture. For him, the current posture of the NPP, especially following the change of government, reveals a disturbing tendency among political actors to speak only when power has shifted.
“These are the kinds of things I just hate. That is pure hypocrisy. The exclusion of public interest in our political space is very troubling,” he said.
He further pointed to how, prior to the 2024 elections, the judiciary was subjected to widespread public ridicule, including the popular nickname “unanimous FC” on social media—a reference to the pattern of unanimous verdicts seen as favoring the then-incumbent NPP.
“Before the elections, it was a common parlance on social media where the Supreme Court was being described as ‘unanimous FC’, was it President Mahama who was doing that? They were in office; what steps did they take?” he questioned.
His sharp criticism comes in the wake of a protest led by the NPP and some of its affiliated political parties in Accra on Monday, May 5, to express disapproval of the decision to suspend the Chief Justice.
