Prepare for afternoon thunderstorms – GMet issues weather alert for Ghana

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has issued a weather alert, urging residents across the country to prepare for isolated thunderstorms this afternoon.
The forecast predicts a mix of partly cloudy skies and sunny conditions in the morning, but thunderstorms are expected to develop from late afternoon into the evening, particularly in coastal, central, and northern regions.
This morning, temperatures will start off mild, ranging from 25°C to 28°C, with some coastal areas, including Accra and Takoradi, experiencing partly cloudy skies.
As the day unfolds, temperatures are expected to rise, with highs of 33°C expected in the afternoon. However, residents are advised to stay alert as thunderstorms, accompanied by heavy rainfall, could affect various regions later in the day.
The northern and middle sectors of Ghana, including cities like Kumasi, Koforidua, and Tamale, are at higher risk for thunderstorms.
GMet has noted a 40% chance of rain in these areas, with temperatures peaking at around 34°C during the afternoon.
These areas could experience sudden rainfall, so it is recommended that individuals plan accordingly and remain prepared for changing weather conditions.
Meanwhile, coastal areas such as Cape Coast, Takoradi, and Axim are expected to experience scattered thunderstorms, with a 30% chance of rain in the afternoon. The temperatures will climb to around 32°C but are expected to cool down in the evening.
GMet is advising people in these affected areas to take necessary precautions, such as carrying umbrellas and staying indoors during severe weather. Residents are also reminded to stay informed by checking weather updates throughout the day.
Key Advice for Residents:
- Stay updated on the weather forecast, especially in the afternoon and evening.
- Take shelter during thunderstorms to avoid potential hazards.
- Be cautious of sudden rainfall, particularly in coastal and northern regions.
- Ensure visibility and safety while traveling, as rain may reduce visibility on the roads.
Stay safe and prepare for the changing weather conditions as thunderstorms and occasional heavy rain are expected to shape the rest of the day in Ghana.
