I was dazed, but it’s a good initiative – Analyst reacts to 24-hour economy plan

As discussions continue around the viability of the 24-hour economy policy proposed by the Mahama administration, an economist has advised a phased approach, suggesting that the initiative be piloted in select areas before being expanded nationwide.

“When I heard the 24-hour economy for the first time, I was dazed. I saw it as a good initiative,” he said during an interview on Asaase Radio’s The Forum over the weekend.

However, he raised concerns about the current clarity and execution of the policy, adding, “The varied submissions of this policy cast doubt. Today, we don’t know where the bill is. The framework is unclear.”

The economist stressed the need for evidence-based rollout, urging the government to test the programme’s impact before full-scale implementation. “My suggestion is that they should pilot it [in certain areas] and see the effect before you move across the entire country,” he said.

Despite these concerns, a government spokesperson maintained that the rollout is already in motion. “The program rollout has commenced in earnest,” the official said.

He further confirmed that the administration has met its initial deadlines, stating, “We promised to commence drafting the needed legal amendments and prepare for implementation within the first 120 days – and we have delivered on that promise.”

According to the government, these legislative amendments are aimed at facilitating the necessary reforms to support the 24-hour economy.

“These amendments aim to enhance social protection, create an enabling environment for the 24-hour economy policy, and promote conducive business and labor relations,” the spokesperson added.
