Ghana Health Service confirms Mpox cases in Accra

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed two cases of Mpox (formerly known as Monkeypox) within the Accra Metropolitan Area of the Greater Accra Region.

The announcement was made in an official statement signed by the Acting Director General of the Service, Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea.

According to the statement, the Ministry of Health and the GHS are working collaboratively to implement urgent and comprehensive public health measures aimed at containing the virus and preventing further transmission.

Mpox is a viral disease that spreads through close contact with an infected person, animal, or contaminated materials. Common symptoms include skin rash, fever, headache, muscle and back pain, low energy, and swollen lymph nodes.

In response to the confirmed cases, the Ghana Health Service has launched immediate contact tracing efforts to identify and monitor individuals who may have been exposed to the virus. These individuals will be provided with medical guidance and closely observed for any symptoms.

As part of containment efforts, surveillance activities are being heightened in health facilities and communities across the region.

This move is aimed at detecting and investigating any additional suspected cases promptly.

The Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service have also ramped up public education initiatives to raise awareness about the disease.

These campaigns focus on the signs and symptoms of Mpox, how it spreads, and the preventive measures individuals can take to protect themselves and others.

The public is being urged to observe proper hand hygiene, avoid close contact with symptomatic individuals, and report any suspected Mpox cases to the nearest healthcare facility without delay.

Reassuring the nation, Prof. Akoriyea emphasized that there is no need for widespread alarm. “Ghana’s public health system remains vigilant,” the statement noted, adding that all established protocols for managing infectious diseases are being rigorously followed.

The government has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public health and expressed confidence in the capacity and expertise of Ghana’s health institutions to effectively manage the situation.
