He speaks without thinking – Asare-Bediako tears into Adongo

Broadcast journalist Gordon Asare-Bediako has sharply criticized Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, Hon. Isaac Adongo, following the latter’s public comments suggesting the Bank of Ghana (BoG) plans to tighten restrictions on over-the-counter US dollar withdrawals from financial institutions.

Speaking during a radio interview, Mr. Adongo—who also serves on the board of the BoG—framed the move as part of broader efforts to stabilize the Ghanaian cedi and prevent further depreciation.

But his remarks have not gone down well with the outspoken broadcaster, who questioned both the appropriateness of Adongo’s public commentary and the potential economic consequences.

Asare-Bediako, appearing on Movement TV, argued that as a board member, Adongo is not the appropriate mouthpiece for such pronouncements and should have exercised greater discretion.

“If the Bank of Ghana wants to issue such a statement, they will do so with wisdom and technical insight because of the implications for the performance of our currency,” he said.

He further accused the MP of being reckless with his words, suggesting that Adongo’s comments could incite fear and panic among the public and contribute to further volatility in the cedi’s value.

Using strong language, Asare-Bediako likened Adongo’s approach to that of someone completely disconnected from economic realities, saying, “He speaks without thinking—like someone who has lost all sense of responsibility.”

While his words were undeniably harsh, the broadcaster’s core concern echoed a broader sentiment about the need for consistency and caution in official communication regarding Ghana’s monetary policies.
