President Mahama to upgrade Ridge Hospital into full teaching hospital

As part of his renewed commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure in the Greater Accra Region, President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to upgrade the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, commonly known as Ridge Hospital, into a full teaching hospital.

Speaking during his Greater Accra ‘Thank You Tour’ held at the Old Ghanata Astroturf in Dodowa, the former president emphasized the urgent need to improve healthcare outcomes across the region.

“Under healthcare delivery in this region we will aim to transform the quality outcomes for our healthcare. We therefore intend to upgrade the Greater Accra Regional Hospital into a full teaching hospital. That is the Ridge Hospital,” he stated.

According to Mahama, this move will not only boost the hospital’s capabilities but will also support specialist training and reduce the number of medical referrals made outside the region.

“The Ridge Hospital will also have an affiliation to the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. This will enhance specialists trainings and reduce referrals outside the region,” he added.

Beyond Ridge Hospital, Mahama also promised to focus on community-level healthcare delivery by expanding CHPS compounds in key peri-urban areas.

“Furthermore we will expand CHIPS compounds in per urban communities like Bortianor, Kpone, Shai Osudoku to ensure that primary healthcare is accessible and reliable,” he said.

Recognizing the challenges faced by healthcare workers stationed at CHPS facilities, Mahama pledged to make their lives easier by ensuring suitable accommodation is provided.

“For existing CHIPS compounds and all new CHIPS compounds we will build we are going to include accommodation for health workers who man the CHIPS compound,” he concluded.

The healthcare vision outlined by the NDC flagbearer signals a targeted approach to addressing both urban and rural medical challenges in the Greater Accra Region, with a focus on sustainability, training, and accessibility.
