British national nabbed in high-stakes drug smuggling attempt at KIA

Security officials at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) intercepted a major drug smuggling attempt on Sunday, May 19, 2025, leading to the arrest of a British citizen and two Ghanaians in what authorities describe as a coordinated operation to traffic narcotics into the country.
The British national, who had flown in from Thailand on Emirates flight EK 787 with a stopover in Dubai, was picked up by operatives of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) during a routine inspection.
Two suitcases in the suspect’s possession were found to contain 92 slabs of a substance suspected to be cannabis.
Preliminary tests on the seized materials confirmed they were cannabis, weighing a total of 53.60 kilograms.
But the bust did not end there. Swift investigations at the airport led to the arrest of two Ghanaians — a customs officer and a porter stationed at the airport’s Commercially Important Person (CIP) area — who are believed to have been assisting in smuggling the drugs past security checks.
The trio are currently in custody as NACOC deepens its probe into what officials suspect could be a link in a wider international drug trafficking ring.
Authorities say charges will be filed once investigations are complete.
