Several parts of Accra submerged after hours of downpour on May 18

Several parts of Ghana’s capital, Accra, were submerged after hours of rain on Sunday, May 18, 2025.

From videos available online from places like New Legon, Lakeside, Pokuase, and Kasoa several residents have had to spend the night standing, while several properties have been lost.

The perennial floods have become an issue of discussion after several parts of the capital got flooded on Sunday, May 18, 2025.

There are concerns that various governments have failed the people of Ghana especially because of the lack of political will to clear persons who have built in water ways.

Meanwhile, Chief Disaster Control Officer, Mohammed Jafaro disclosed in an interview that although several distress calls have come to their office, there are no casualties recorded.

“So far, we have received many distress calls—residents in Adenta, Tema, and around Kaneshie calling for help—so that is why we have dispatched teams. But no casualty as I am talking to you now,” Jafaro stated on Channel One Newsroom.

“Most of the problems we have observed are that there is a lack of drainage in some communities, some of the areas too are filled with filth… In some of the areas also we have engineering defects,” he explained.
