Another British citizen arrested at KIA for drug trafficking within 24 hours

The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has confirmed the arrest of another British national at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) for attempting to smuggle cannabis out of Ghana.

This marks the second such arrest involving a British citizen in less than 24 hours.

The latest suspect, a female passenger traveling on British Airways flight BA 2066 from Accra to Gatwick Airport in the United Kingdom, was found with a suitcase containing 32 slabs of substances suspected to be cannabis. A field test confirmed the substance as cannabis, with a total weight of 17.72 kilograms.

She was immediately detained and later transferred to NACOC headquarters for further investigations.

This incident follows closely on the heels of a major drug bust on May 18, where another British national was arrested upon arrival at KIA from Thailand via Dubai aboard Emirates flight EK 787. In that case, authorities discovered 92 slabs of cannabis concealed in two suitcases, amounting to 53.6 kilograms.

Subsequent investigations into the May 18 case led to the arrest of two suspected accomplices: a customs officer and a porter assigned to the airport’s Commercially Important Person (CIP) section.

The two are believed to have played roles in facilitating the attempted smuggling.

NACOC has reiterated its commitment to curbing drug trafficking through enhanced collaboration with airport security, law enforcement agencies, and international partners.

The recent developments, the commission says, reflect both the scale of the trafficking threat and the growing effectiveness of counter-narcotics operations in the country.

The suspect in the latest arrest remains in custody as investigations continue.
