FDA warns public against two alcoholic drinks laced with marijuana extracts

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a public alert against the consumption of two alcoholic beverages—Kings Orange Flavoured Liqueur and Jupiter 1990—after laboratory analysis revealed the presence of marijuana extracts in the drinks.

In a statement released on Sunday, May 18, the Authority said the products are not registered and pose serious health risks.

The FDA traced the production of both drinks to FAMUDE Catering Services, an unlicensed facility located in the Ashanti Region.

Following the discovery, the FDA swiftly moved to shut down the FAMUDE facility. The company’s license was revoked, and the matter has been handed over to the Suntresu District Police for further investigation.

The FDA further noted that it is working closely with the Ghana Police Service’s Drug Law Enforcement Unit (DLEU) and the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) to manage and contain the distribution of these illicit beverages.

Despite earlier enforcement operations, the Authority revealed that in April it received intelligence about ongoing sales of Kings Orange Flavoured Liqueur in Koforidua, leading to the discovery of a new illegal production site linked to the same network.

The FDA is urging members of the public to refrain from consuming these products and to report any known locations where they are being distributed.

Authorities stressed their commitment to protecting public health and warned that any individuals or businesses found distributing the unapproved beverages will face legal consequences.
