Why Apostle Chibuzor rejected another church branch to educate poor kids

Apostle Dr. Chibuzor Gift Chinyere, General Overseer of Omega Power Ministry (OPM), has announced the purchase of a church building previously occupied by the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) at Marine Base, Port Harcourt.

However, instead of turning it into another branch of OPM, he is transforming the space into a tuition-free school for underprivileged children in the area.

The outspoken clergyman, known for his philanthropic interventions across Nigeria, made the announcement in a Facebook post on Friday, May 16, 2025.

“By the Grace of GOD ALMIGHTY, today 16th May, 2025, I just used tithes and offerings from the church to buy a church building that will be converted to another OPM free school,” he declared.

While his pastoral team had recommended the space be used to expand the ministry’s physical presence in the area, Apostle Chibuzor explained that his visit to the Marine Base community revealed a more pressing need.

“My Pastor advised me to use the church building for a branch of OPM church as the building is currently being used for Church by Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Marine Base branch, but I refused.

“The last time I visited that part of Marine Base, it is densely populated by very poor people. And I saw poor children running up and down without going to school.”

For him, the issue went beyond just expanding church walls—it was about restoring lost hope in a forgotten community.

“As we are aware, lack of education is one of the major causes of poverty, crime and lack of salvation of souls,” he explained. “One of the weapons the early missionaries used to win many souls to Christ is free schools, free hospitals and then they introduced our Jesus Christ to them.”

According to the OPM leader, providing free education will do more to draw hearts to God than simply erecting another worship center.

“So for me, rather than converting the church building to OPM branch church, I am converting it to a free school so that it will attract sinners. When sinners see the love GOD has for them by giving them free school, they would want to know GOD more.”

The Port Harcourt-based clergyman, who has previously set up free schools, free hospitals, and scholarship schemes for Nigerians, says the church must look beyond traditional structures and focus on community transformation.

“Since early this year, I have come to the conclusion that any OPM branch that is very close to each other, one among them will be converted to tuition-free school or OPM free hospitals. Then members will move to the nearest OPM church.”

He questioned the logic of church proliferation without social impact.

“What is the essence of opening church branches very close to each other, while it is the same Gospel of Christ that is being preached? There are many widows in that same church that their children are not going to school because they cannot afford their school fees.”
