We got quite a few things wrong – Bawumia apologises for NPP’s 2024 election performance

Former Vice President and 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has offered an unreserved apology to party members and supporters over the NPP’s performance in the 2024 general elections.

“We did not get everything right. We got quite a few things wrong. If we are given another opportunity, we will get many things right, because we have learnt the lessons that will guide us forward,” Dr. Bawumia said in a recent address in London.

The apology comes as the party continues its internal introspection following a decisive electoral loss that ended its hold on power.

An internal review committee, chaired by former Speaker of Parliament Professor Mike Oquaye, has reportedly completed an assessment of the party’s electoral showing, although its findings are yet to be made public.

Many within the NPP view Dr. Bawumia’s public acknowledgement of the party’s missteps as a vital first step in restoring unity and credibility as the party regroups.

In a related development, Bawumia has called on party members to put the past behind them and focus on a collective mission to restore the NPP’s fortunes ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Addressing party supporters in the Volta Region on Thursday, May 8, during the NPP’s ongoing ‘Thank You Tour’, Dr. Bawumia emphasised the need for unity, determination, and grassroots engagement as key pillars of the party’s recovery.

“Let us all rise and rebuild together, for victory in 2028 is not a dream but a mission. We have the talent, the ideas and the resolve—now is the time to act,” Bawumia urged.

In what appeared to be a moment of reflection and renewed purpose, he acknowledged the party’s defeat in the recent polls but insisted the setback must not become a stumbling block.

“We did not achieve the desired result, but that is behind us now. What matters is how we rise from this and strengthen our party’s structures at every level,” he stated.

Dr. Bawumia stressed that a stronger presence at the grassroots level would be instrumental in reconnecting with the electorate and regaining public confidence.
