We are calling for the resignation of the Auditor-General – UTAG-UG

The University of Ghana Chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG-UG) has called for the immediate resignation of Auditor-General Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu. Following a recent payroll audit report, the chapter accuses his office of professional misconduct and ethical breaches.

The demand comes from a special payroll verification audit published by the Auditor-General’s office, which alleged that the University of Ghana overstated employee compensation by GH¢59.2 million between 2022 and 2024. But UTAG-UG has rejected the findings, describing the report as misleading, damaging, and lacking procedural fairness.

“It appears to us that the audit service is more interested in appearing to be working rather than doing the right thing, and in so doing, they ignore ethical standards that guide their profession,” UTAG-UG General Secretary Jerry Joe said.

According to the association, the audit report was published without allowing the university to respond or provide clarification—an omission UTAG-UG considers a violation of basic auditing ethics.

“The University of Ghana maintains that the audit report was not shared with them for them to make comments and clarify any discrepancies before this was made public. This is unfair and unethical. This is a serious breach of the ethics required of the audit service and the profession,” Mr. Joe emphasised.

UTAG-UG believes the conduct of the Auditor-General undermines the credibility of public institutions and tarnishes the hard-earned reputation of university staff.

They argue that responsible auditing must be transparent, consultative, and procedurally sound.

“For the Auditor-General to sit in his office and preside over such an institution that disregards ethical standard practice, we are hereby calling for the resignation of the Auditor-General, or we will petition the President for him to be removed,” Mr. Joe stated.
