AMA clears vendors, illegal structures at Circle

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) on Wednesday, May 21, continued its decongestion campaign at the Circle Neoplan Station, targeting unauthorized structures, street vendors, and enforcing sanitation and traffic regulations.

This operation marked the second day of the ongoing citywide initiative aimed at reducing congestion and restoring order across the capital.

AMA officials say the exercise is part of broader efforts to enhance pedestrian and vehicular movement and to ensure adherence to Accra’s city planning guidelines.

Day 1 of the campaign, which began on Tuesday, focused on high-traffic zones around the AMA Head Office.

Specific areas included Kinbu Road to the Railways, ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, and Opera Square to Adabraka — all known for heavy street vending and persistent congestion.

Authorities are urging traders and commuters to cooperate with the taskforce to avoid unnecessary confrontations. The AMA reiterated its commitment to making Accra a cleaner, safer, and more orderly city.

Meanwhile, Mayor of Accra, Michael Allotey, disclosed that items confiscated during the exercise in the Central Business District would be donated to the Ghana Prisons Service. He noted that unlike previous practices, the AMA would no longer auction seized items.

“We’re ending the auctions. These items will now go to the Prisons Service where they can be put to better use,” he stated.
