I am defending the judiciary, not violating the law

Former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has justified his decision to act as legal counsel for suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo in a case currently before the Supreme Court.

Mr. Dame, who filed the suit on behalf of the Chief Justice on Wednesday, May 21, is challenging the constitutionality of the ongoing proceedings to remove her from office.

The suit names the current Attorney-General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, as the respondent.

In the legal action, the suspended Chief Justice is seeking an interlocutory injunction to halt the activities of the five-member committee set up to probe petitions for her removal.

She is also asking the Supreme Court to restrain Justices Gabriel Scott Pwamang and Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu from participating in the inquiry, citing doubts about their neutrality.

Speaking in an interview on Joy News, Mr. Dame rejected any assertions of conflict of interest arising from his involvement.

He maintained that his actions are entirely within the bounds of the law and are aimed at defending the independence of the judiciary.

“It is about time that good men in this country speak for what is righteous and what is right,” he said.

“If there is any Attorney-General who, right from his appointment, has stood up for the judiciary and spoken against attacks on it, it is myself.”

Mr. Dame’s comments come amid heightened national debate over the role of the judiciary and the appropriate limits of political and legal influence in cases involving top judicial figures.

The Supreme Court is yet to rule on the request for the injunction.
