Muntaka declares nationwide operation to clear beggars, prostitutes from urban centres

The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has reiterated the government’s determination to rid major cities of beggars, street dwellers, and prostitutes as part of a broader effort to restore order in urban areas.

During a working visit to the Northern Region on Thursday, May 22, the minister announced that a nationwide operation will soon commence in five key cities, including Tamale.

The initiative will be carried out in collaboration with the country’s security services.

Speaking at the commissioning of a new four-storey, 24-unit apartment complex built by the State Housing Company for the Ghana Immigration Service in Tamale, Muntaka emphasized that the government is serious about cleaning up the streets.

He disclosed that a recent operation in Accra led to the arrest of over 2,000 foreign nationals engaged in begging, with nearly half already repatriated.

The remainder, he said, are expected to be processed and removed from the country by the end of the week.

Addressing the issue of open prostitution, Muntaka warned that individuals engaged in such activities would also be apprehended and deported.

He urged those involved to leave voluntarily before enforcement measures begin.

“The beggars are not just a nuisance, they are a threat to our national security,” the minister said.

“By the end of this week, we aim to complete their removal. I assure the rest that we are coming after them—this includes prostitutes openly operating on our streets. We will not relent until we restore sanity.”

The Asawase MP emphasized that the operation is a critical step in enhancing public safety and maintaining the dignity of Ghana’s urban environment.
